PLASTIMOTH

Dscovered in St James’ Church, New Cross, Southeast London

This is a speculative creature born from an abandoned umbrella. I saw a discarded, broken umbrella next to the heater in St James’ Church, and that moment made me want to turn this piece of rubbish into a new lifeform.

Concept

The Plastimoth is a newly observed creature found beside a heater inside St James’ Church in New Cross, Southeast London. Since it was discovered close to a warm surface, researchers believe it prefers heated environments and may rely on electricity to stay active.

This creature has some unusual features: water-resistant surfaces, foldable metal wings made from umbrella ribs, and five main behaviours: steady flight, rapid flight, idle, hovering, sleep, and a startled reaction. Its movements feel similar to nocturnal insects, but its body is entirely built from discarded human-made materials.

Scientists suggest that the Plastimoth may belong to a new kind of synthetic urban fauna. Its flexible wings and ability to glide, hover, and fold itself tightly make it well suited for surviving in warm vents, narrow gaps, and sheltered corners throughout the urban environment.
